Supporting Every Mother Counts

Our rotating charity for January’s karma classes (every Friday night at 7:30pm), Every Mother Counts, was brought to us by a member who dedicates her time and energy, not to mention her miles, to the organization. This global charity works to “make pregnancy and childbirth safe for everyone, everywhere.” We’d like you to meet Kathleen ‘KK’ Kenny, MYS yogi and prenatal care provider. KK first got connected with Every Mother Counts (EMC) when she went to Haiti in 2015 and volunteered for a birth and prenatal clinic funded by the charity started in 2010 by Christy Turlington Burns after the release of her documentary film, No Woman, No Cry.

After returning home from Haiti, KK remained involved with EMC. For many women, distance can be the barrier to accessing the care needed while pregnant and in labor. Inspired by this very real challenge, one way EMC raises funds is by having folks run, with the miles representing the distance that many women have to walk to access care. Each runner fundraises, getting friends, family, and more to sponsor their miles. “I have done three events with them as one of their runners,” says KK. And she’d love for you to join her! Learn more about joining an event or starting your own to help further the work of Every Mother Counts by visiting their website and taking advantage of the great resources they have there to get started. When not caring for babies or running for maternal health, you can often find KK around the studio and she is always over-joyed to connect about the work she has done fundraising for EMC as well as how you, too, can get involved. Don’t hesitate to start a conversation with her – especially if you join us for a Friday night karma class – and learn more about what every $5 cash donation supports.
